Baking soda does work, both for cleaning and deoderizing; but if the smell has really permeated the cloth body and stuffing, drastic measures such as Febreze must be taken.
One doll I received had been packed with a dryer sheet on her stomach (probably in an attempt to deoderize her in transit) and well packaged in bubble wrap. The dryer sheet didn't even dent the smell--and I couldn't even salvage the bubble wrap for future use--it reeked so badly, I just threw it away, box and all. I shudder to think of what the home where that doll came from must be like!
